Shakespeare Schools Festival

On the 19th November 2019 SJT drama students took to the Burnley Mechanics stage to perform Antony and Cleopatra as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Their performance was a huge success with their take on the play transporting us to warmer climates underpinned by bollywood music and dance.

This is the second time that SJT has participated in the festival with students already talking about next year’s performance choice!

Friends and family turned out to support the group and were in awe of the tragic story which unfolded before them. Special mentions go to our Queen of Egypt who stole the show with her interpretation of Queen Cleopatra, she showed us a strong, powerful woman but also heart-breaking emotion in the devastating last hours of her life.

Two students were invited by Paul Jenkins of Rossendale Radio to talk about Shakespeare and the Arts. Listeners were treated to a live performance of a section of the play and personal song requests from the pair and Teacher Director MIss Byatt.

It was a lovely experience to be live on the radio talking about their experience of the arts and this year’s festival demonstrating how important the arts are to our young people's lives.

Students are looking forward to later performing the piece in school and are in talks about possibilities for other performances, watch this space!
