Year 9 Design & Technology

Product Design
Topic  Renewable resources – Wind Turbines
No of lessons  12
When is it happening  Year 9
What will students learn

Students will learn how to design from a context. Students will study how power is generated from renewable resources. Students will learn about basic techniques and materials used in the construction industry. Students will further develop their Iterative Design Skills.

Students will further develop their skills using marking out, hand and machine tools.

Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic

This project will introduce students to the concept of 'Designing from a context'. The context chosen will be 'Produce power from a renewable resource'.

Students will learn how to analyse a task, generate initial ideas, prototyping, modeling, developing ideas, iterating a design, producing a final product, testing and evaluation.

Students will develop an understanding of how power is produced from a wide range of renewable resources.

Students will explore the techniques and materials used in the construction industry and how they are applied in domestic and commercial contexts.

This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding

Students will have knowledge of the Iterative design process. Students will have knowledge how to design from a context. Students will have knowledge of renewable resources.  Students will have knowledge of non renewable resources.

Students will have knowledge of power generation.

Students will have knowledge of construction materials and techniques.  Students will have knowledge of tools used in the construction industry.  Students will have knowledge of Health and safety policy and practice used in the construction industry.

Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic

Students will be able to generate a range of ideas which avoid 'fixation' in response to a given context. They will be able to fully utilize the Iterative process when designing and manufacturing a product.  They will be able to describe how power is generated from renewable and non renewable resources. Students will be able to name construction/resistant materials used within this industry and describe the methods and techniques used to manipulate these materials.

Students will be able to confidently use marking out, hand and machine tools to produce a prototype/model/final product.

This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop

Students will develop their skills in responding to a context led design brief.  Students will develop their Iterative Design Skills.  Students will develop their prototyping, modeling and making skills.  Students will develop their skills using marking out, hand and machine tools.

Key vocabulary that students should know and understand Prototype, Iterative, Specification , Evaluation, Construction
