Computing
Topic  Data representation 1
No of lessons  8
When is it happening  Year 8 Term 3
What will students learn Student will understand how numbers can be represented in binary, and be able to carry out simple operations on binary numbers [for example, binary addition, and conversion between binary and decimal]. Students will understand how binary is used when we type text, use pictures and music.
Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic  Students can: identify the two states of Binary, explain why Binary is used in computer systems, identify at ways Binary is used in real life, identify steps to convert Binary to Denary and vice versa, identify steps to do Binary Addition, can explain overflow, explain why Hexadecimal is required, identify all the numbers/letters in the Hexadecimal numbering system, identify steps to convert Denary to Hexadecimal and vice versa, identify steps to convert Binary to Hexadecimal and vice versa. Use of binary when we type text, use pictures and music.
This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding  Simple arithmetic, such as addition.
Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic Students can perform the following: convert Binary to Denary and vice versa, do Binary Addition, convert Denary to Hexadecimal and vice versa, convert Binary to Hexadecimal and vice versa.
This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop  Simple arithmetic, such as addition.
Key vocabulary that students should know and understand

State, Binary, Switches, Vice Versa, Denary, Bit, Byte, Overflow, Hexadecimal,
