Topic  Basketball
No of lessons  6-8
When is it happening  Term 2 Year 8
What will students learn Students will recap and  develop their ability to perform basketball skills learnt in year 7 such as passing (chest, bounce, overhead), shooting, dribbling, attacking and defending. Students will learn new skills such as the lay-up, rebounding, protecting the ball etc. Students will also further develop an understanding for attacking and defensive principles. Students will explore a a variety of basketball attacking and defensive formations, positions and roles. Students will also recap and master the knowledge and understanding of the basic rules of the game (lines of the court, what is or isn't a foul, double dribble, travelling and developing a deeper more cemented understanding of the rules of the game. For example, rules of the free throw, rules regarding the key and not being able to pass the ball back into their own half etc.  Students will develop their communication, resilience, teamwork and leadership skills through a series of different activities, practices and games. Students will recap the components of fitness required in basketball and develop a deeper understanding of when and why these components of fitness would be used in the game.
Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic

Recap the origin of basketball, (The history of basketball began with its invention in 1891 in the USA by PE teacher James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than American football).  Students will develop a deeper understanding by building upon knowledge of the health benefits playing invasion games has physically, mentally and socially. How skills can be learnt and transferred into other sports and everyday life, such as communicating, resilience, leading, problem solving and working collaboratively as a team. Students will recap and refine basketball specific skills such as passing (chest, bounce, overhead), shooting and dribbling. Students will learn new skills and knowledge such as the lay-up, rebounding, protecting the ball, beating an opponent etc. Students will also develop a deeper understanding for attacking and defensive principles such as formations, positions , roles and the whole team attack and defend. Deeper rules into basketball will be covered.  For example, rules of the free throw, rules regarding the key and not being able to pass the ball back into their own half etc.  Students/professional athletes performance will also be analysed create and devise strategies to outwit an opponent

This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding

Students will recap and name and explain areas on the court such as the backlines, sidelines, the ‘D’, the ‘key’ and basic rules e.g. fouls, free throws, double dribble, travelling, tip off , not being able to pass back into own half etc.

Students will have deeper and more confident knowledge to name and explain when might you pass and why, why might you use different types of passes (chest, bounce, overhead), when might you shoot and why, when might they need to beat an opponent and why, what type of shot you would choose etc. If students cannot retrieve the knowledge physically then they should be able to recite how to perform the skill verbally or when the skill may be performed. Students will recap, refine and develop knowledge of tactics of keeping possession, defending and attacking strategies which will be retrieved from previous invasion games. Students will implement basketball specific attacking and defensive strategies into each lesson such as using key words, formations, positions and roles. They will  also need to recall these strategies when participating in other invasion sports such as hockey, rugby etc.  Students will further develop their understanding of the components of fitness required in basketball and when they are required throughout a game situation.

Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic Students will undergo a variety of practices focussing on basketball skills which will able them to refine and develop key skills used in the sport such as ball handling, passing (chest, bounce, overhead), dribbling, shooting (set shot, lay-up). Students will learn and develop new skills and knowledge such as the lay-up, rebounding, protecting the ball, beating an opponents etc.  For example, rules of the free throw, rules regarding the key and not being able to pass the ball back into their own half etc.  Students will be involved in isolated practices which will force the skill development and a variety of independent practice, 1v1, 2v1, 3v1 and small sided games. This competition will force the students to work under pressure and develop their skill set to a higher ability. Students will acquire knowledge through participating in practices, watching and performing in demonstrations, using task cards and analysing video footage.
This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop  Students will develop skills and techniques of passing (chest, bounce, overhead), dribbling, shooting (set shot, jump shot, lay-up), rebounding, protecting the ball,  beating an opponent,  attacking strategies, defending strategies.

The Big Question  Retrieve components of fitness knowledge and discuss which are needed in Basketball and how are these transferable to other sports (hinterland)
