# Topic 10 Year 7 Mathematics

Mathematics Topic Coordinates No of lessons 8 When is it happening Term 2 Year 7 What will students In this unit, students develop their understanding of the cartesian coordinate grid and solve problems in all four quadrants. Students will be familiar with coordinates from work at primary school and in other subjects. The tasks in this unit will give students opportunities to apply their understanding from previous units including negative numbers and geometric properties of triangles and quadrilaterals. The unit begins by revisiting their understanding of working with a number line in one dimension to working in two dimensions. Students solve problems involving midpoints and develop strategies for solving related problems. Students will begin to describe the equations of horizontal and vertical lines by recognising the constant x or y coordinates along them. Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic Forming shapes from midpoints Finding and using midpoints Solving shape problems involving midpoints Forming shapes from diagonals Comparing line segment lengths Solving shape problems involving diagonals Equations of lines Drawing horizontal and vertical lines on a coordinate grid Understanding equations of horizontal and vertical lines Exploring horizontal and vertical lines Solving problems involving horizontal and vertical lines The 2-D coordinate axes Describe positions on a coordinate grid Line segments Identify and compare line segment Use horizontal and vertical lengths of line segments Finding midpoints Find midpoints of line segments Solve problems involving midpoint Solving geometric problems Solving tilted square problems Solving problems involving midpoints This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding Negative numbers Familiarity with coordinate grid (Primary) Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic Be able to use grid paper and be bale to use x and y coordinates This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop Be able to draw coordinates and read coordinates on grid paper Key vocabulary that students should know and understand Coordinate, segment, midpoint, horizontal, vertical, axis, quadrant The Big Question Can I plot coordinates and find the mid point  of two different coordinates? Key questions that students should be able to answer at the end of the 'Topic' Can I plot and read coordinates? Can I put the line segments into 3 sets of same length pairs? Can I find the midpoint  of two coordinates? If a small square encloses a larger square. Can I find the coordinates of the vertices of both squares? Given the midpoints  of a triangle, can I find the coordinates of the vertices of a triangle? Can I use diagonal of a rhombus to find the coordinates of the other vertices of this rhombus? Can I find the equation of a  horizontal and a  vertical line? Can I find the distance between the line? Can I draw a rectangle, if only two coordinates and a line of symmetry is given?
