Topic 5 Year 7 Computing

Computing
Topic  CPU Architecture & Performance
No of lessons  6
When is it happening  Year 7 Term 3
What will students learn Students will develop their understanding of The CPU and what it does. Learn what the control unit, arithmetic logic unit, cache is and what do they do. Learn about Von Neumanns Architecture and its main features for example accumulator, the program counter (PC) and registers. Students will also learn how the performance of a CPU can be improved by clock speed, number of cores and by increasing the cache.
Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic  Students will know what CPU is and how CPU processes all the data and instructions that make a system work. Students will know about three main parts of the CPU the control unit, the arithmetic logic unit and the cache. The architecture of Von Neumann. Students will know how Performance of the CPU can be improved by clock speed, number of cores and cache size.
This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding  NA.
Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic

Students should be able to identify structure of CPU. Students should be able to identify input and output devices. Students should be able to identify the functions of three different parts of the CPU. Students should be able to justify which part of the CPU can help to improve performance compared to others.

Students should eb able to identify and describe the architecture of Von Neuman.

Students should be able to justify how Performance of the CPU can be improved by clock speed, number of cores and cache size.

This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop  NA
