|What will students learn||
Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group. Through orienteering, students must learn how to correctly locate and record control points with a partner whilst applying their cardiovascular fitness. They must know how to use the features of the map to help them locate these control points. These include catching features and line features, scale, gradient and use of the key. Students must develop skills and tactics that will help them complete the courses as quickly as possible
|Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic'||This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic||
Students will develop their orienteering terminology: star course, line feature, catching feature, scale, control point, gradient, key etc. and understanding the meaning of these terms and how they apply to orienteering. Students will also learn rules around safety i.e. return to start point on three sharp whistles, never become separated from your partner.
|This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding||
Students will recap their knowledge of cardiovascular fitness and the importance of cardiovascular fitness whilst orienteering. They will also recap the reason for pacing and how to do this effectively. Students will develop knowledge of the importance of leadership, organisation, communication, trust, resilience and independence for orienteering and in everyday life.
|Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic'||This is the skills that students will meet for the first time in this topic||Students will develop the ability to locate control points easily by using catching features and therefore learn to 'aim off'. Students will also learning 'thumbing', measuring the distance of each leg using the scale.|
|This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop||
Students will learn how to pace themselves for longer courses and recap the sprint technique for shorter relay courses. Students will also recap skills of how to use a key and scale (cross curricular links with geography and maths).
