Overarching question: Where do we belong?

Islam.

In this unit students will investigate the beliefs and values of Islam. They will explore the idea that some actions have a deeper meaning and significance, particularly within religious life. They should develop an understanding of spirituality and reflect on the importance of rituals.

Students will investigate the beginnings of Islam, the importance of Prophet Muhammad and how he influences Muslims today.  They will review the 5 Pillars as a foundation for belief and investigate their importance for strengthening faith and the Ummah.  

In this unit students will consider the idea of an outer/inner journey with religious ritual – the outer action with an inner meaning.

Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic 

In this unit students will investigate:

Beliefs and values of Islam.

This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding 

Many students will have far more understanding and experience of Islam than any other religion. Some students may have already learnt about the five pillars but are unlikely to know in great depth how the six articles of faith in pact everyday life.  

Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic

Describe and explain a range of beliefs, teachings and sources of wisdom and authority in Islam. Evaluate a wide range of ways in which commitment and identity are expressed within Islam. Interpret and respond to a range of beliefs, teachings and sources of wisdom and authority as coherent systems or ways of seeing the world.

This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop  Explain and evaluate how and why individuals and communities express the meanings of their identity, beliefs and values in many different forms and ways of living.
